22 WHAT’S ON Community Guide Greek Festival on George Street SOUTH AUSTRALIA The annual George Street Greek Festival will be held on George Street, Thebarton on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December, outside the church of St Nicholas. The festival brings the best of Greek culture, turning the busy road strip into an two-day Greek outdoor party. For the fourth year in a row, the festival will host many Greek dance groups and live music by Acropolis Band on both days. This time, singer Kalliroy Kanavos from Melbourne will be performing at the event, accompanied by George Kirkopoulos on the clarinet. This is a freeentrance to all event. When: Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December 2014 Where: George Street, St Nicholas Church, Thebarton, South Australia The rich tradition of Eastern Orthodox spirituality is being celebrated in Ballarat as the exhibition 'EIKON: Icons of the Orthodox Christian World'. Showing until the end of January, the exhibition includes 80 icons from all around the Orthodox world. The exhibition also has a soundscape incorporating traditional chanting, bells and other sounds of an Orthodox service, recreating the original setting of the works. This weekend, cinephiles will have a last chance to see the awarded movie Little England, on Saturday 6 December at 6.30 pm, or the Cannes-nominated film Xenia at 7.00 pm. On Sunday 7 December, the screening of the film A Blast is scheduled for 2.00 pm, while the closing night event will start at 7.45 pm, followed by the screening of Mad Max. The conference will attempt to bring together radical or revisionist ideas about the position of Greece in the global world and discuss their underpinning philosophies. Unframing Hellenism has as its purpose the destereotyping of Greek culture, the de-mythologisation of its current images and the reconstruction of its imaginative potential. Light refreshments will also be offered at the conference. Next year's lineup brings Greek films from the '50s, '60s and '70s to the big screen at the museum Pavilion.
