This was the first round of games with only 16 teams, as on Saturday OFI became the second club after Niki Volou to withdraw from the Super League. The Reds saw off Kerkyra 3-0 in Piraeus thanks to goals by Chori Dominguez, Alber- to Botia and Franco Jara, but had striker Costas Mitroglou come off injured in the second half. His injury means he will miss Greece's game in Hungary a week later and national coach Sergio Markarian has called up Apostolos Giannou of Panionios to replace the Fulham-owned striker. Panathinaikos suffered its second away loss in the space of four days, as after going down at Atromitos on Wednesday it lost 1-0 at Veria on Sunday to a local side that was clearly superior on the night. Ben Mohamed scored the game's only goal in the first half, to leave the Greens nine points behind Olympiakos that has a game in hand, too. PAOK also lost away from home, going down 3-1 at Panthrakikos on Saturday to goals by Nicolas Diguini, Olympiakos needs just two wins from six games to clinch the title. Christos Tzanis and Igor de Souza. Dimitris Papadopoulos pulled one back for PAOK. The battle for the fifth spot, behind Asteras Tripolis that downed relegation-destined Ergotelis 2-1, is really heating up, with four credible challengers for a play-off spot. They are PAS Giannina, Atromitos, Xanthi and Pane- tolikos, with five rounds of games left to play. PAS Giannina gets three points from its fixture at OFI, Xanthi downed Atromitos 1-0 in the weekend's most balanced game, and Panetolikos suffered a shock home loss to Levadiakos with a 1-0 score. On Monday Platanias beat Kalloni Lesvou 1-0. The former OFI, Ajax and Greece striker told an extraordinary press conference at Iraklio that the club is withdrawing to preserve its decency, in the face of the interests of the federation, the league, of other clubs and of the TV network that has the Super League rights. "The masks have dropped in the war against our team. OFI was the easy victim for others to stay up comfortably. We have seen the Hellenic Football Federation decide against issuing documents for 20-yearold players to join OFI, for us to finish the championship in decency," argued Machlas. "We may now withdraw on our own free will. The OFI family will make its decisions by itself. We can escape the rot of soccer to become once again the team that everyone enjoys. "They did not kill OFI off, they just humiliated it due to the safety clause by Nova TV, for fear of the league losing 2.5 million euros. It is a shame for everyone, it is a shame for soccer. "It's a pity that the team is leaving the championship, but on the other hand, it is with satisfaction that we see the team leave this wretched soccer," said the president of the club that would celebrate its 90th anniversary this year. OFI's withdrawal is leaving Greece's top flight with 16 teams, as Niki Volou has also withdrawn for financial reasons. OFI president Nikos Machlas announced the withdrawal of the popular Cretan club on Saturday.
