32 THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 13 JUNE 2015 SPORT FFA Cup qualification looms for four lucky Victorian Greeksponsored teams HELEN VELISSARIS Four spots are there for the taking in Victoria for the FFA Cup qualification, and four Greek-sponsored teams are in contention. South Melbourne, South Springvale (Aris), Oakleigh Cannons and Heidelberg United are all vying for a spot to the round of 32 after beating some tough opponents in their preliminary matches. FFA Cup darlings, Aris will have a huge Greek derby to contend with as they take on Oakleigh Cannons in the blockbuster match of the qualifiers this Wednesday. Cannon's coach Arthur Papas will be bringing a resurgent strength, desperate to show the team is not a lost cause after its abysmal start to the season. Papas knows he'll be facing a much more experienced FFA Cup team, and says he won't be complacent. "Everyone knows Aris as being the success story of the Cup last year (and this year as well), so we're not going to be complacent," he tells Neos Kosmos. "It's going to be a tricky tie, especially since it's being played at their grounds." He says he's adjusted his training schedule to include more recovery sessions seeing as the team has had a gruelling fixture timetable. "It's going to be the second time in three weeks that we've got three games in the week," Papas says. " s e - a e. d t e "So the main thing is to keep the players fresh, recovering well and making sure when they're entering the ground they're as close to optimum level as possible." Papas has managed to take down one of the NPLV's best, with South Melbourne earning its first loss of the season in round 14 against the Cannons. o - Bill Lambropoulos was able to ferry Aris to the top 16 of the competition last year, a fairytale run. The nimble Aris' boys were able to capitalise on their opponent's complacency and secured some extraordinary wins. The Aris enter a tough match against Oakleigh Cannons. PHOTO: KOSTAS DEVES. Heidelberg United have a week to see how their NPL clubmates fare before they take on Goulburn Valley Suns on June 24. Very much the favourites to take the win thanks to their almost faultless season so far, Heidelberg will be chasing an early goal to secure their win. Blatter tendered his resignation last Wednesday (AEST), less than a week after Swiss police staged a dawn raid on a luxury hotel in Zurich and arrested several officials on corruption charges filed by US prosecutors in New York and just a few days after being re-elected for a fifth term as FIFA president. However, Blatter is intent on staying in office until his successor is appointed and wants to lead the effort to clean up his federation. This week the European Parliament called for Blatter to resign from his post immediately. "The European Parliament ... demand, among other things, the immediate resignation of FIFA president Joseph Blatter," it read. "Parliament welcomes Joseph Blatter's resignation as FIFA president and calls on the federation to select an interim leader to replace him. FIFA president Sepp Blatter still defiant. "FIFA should put in place a transparent, balanced and democratic decision-making process, including for the election of the new president, adds the resolution, which was passed by a show of hands." It seems Blatter was unfazed by the demand. After the EU parliament's comments, FIFA released a statement saying Blatter was staying put until the Congress. "FIFA is perplexed by the European Parliament's resolution," a FIFA spokesman said. "As is well known, following his re-election, the FIFA president already decided, owing to the special circumstances in which FIFA finds itself, to lay down his mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress." FIFA say there are "various date options" for the extraordinary Congress and did not confirm a report by the BBC that the election would take place on December 16. Last week, FIFA's audit and compliance committee chairman and the man responsible for overseeing the election, Domenico Scala, said it could take place any time between December and March. The president is elected by FIFA's 209 member associa- tions, which hold one vote each. Resignations continue The soap opera at FIFA took another turn when it announced that the organisation's director of communications Walter de Gregorio De Gregorio was leaving after making a joke at FIFA's expense on a Swiss chat show. "The FIFA president, secretary-general and media director are sitting in a car. Who's driving. Answer? The police," De Gregorio said. Becoming a prominent figure in the organisation, he had fronted up to the media storm two weeks ago in the immediate aftermath of the raids. Source: Reuters/AFP
