Aside from being one of the oldest natural sweeteners, honey can be used to fix anything that ails us, from treating wounds to beating hangovers. BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM Honey is loaded with vitamins and minerals, with certain types also having been found to contain antioxidants - which can help fight cell damage that may increase the risk of heart disease or even cancer - and nutraceuticals, which are very effective for the removal of free radicals from the body. Some varieties of honey also possess large amounts of friendly bacteria. This includes up to six species of lactobacilli and four species of bifidobacteria. Fried feta with honey and sesame seeds Having its origins in Cretan cuisine, this mouth-watering feta version can be your new favourite appetiser. Ingredients: 250g feta cheese 2 eggs 1 teaspoon of paprika 1 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper 70-80g of flour, enough to coat the feta 60g sesame seeds olive oil for frying 4 tablespoons of honey Method: 1. To prepare the fried feta, start by cutting the feta cheese into little blocks, about 1.5cm thick. 2. Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat with a fork. Into another bowl add the flour, the paprika and the pepper and mix with a spoon to combine the ingredients. Into a third bowl, add the sesame seeds. 3. Roll each piece of feta into the eggs, then roll into the flour. Roll each piece again into the eggs and then in the sesame seeds, so that all sides are covered. 4. Heat about 6-7 tablespoons of olive oil into a frying pan, just enough to cover the bottom of the pan, and fry the feta until nicely coloured. Use a slotted spoon to flip the fried feta, so that it is nicely coloured on all sides. When done, place on some kitchen paper to absorb the extra oil. 5. In the meantime, warm the honey into a saucepan, or the microwave, until liquid. 6. Serve the fried feta while still hot with a drizzle of honey. EASES COUGHS, SORE THROAT Buckwheat honey in particular is said to help with throat irritation. Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it can also kill certain bacteria which cause infection. It is a common practice of professional singers to use honey for soothing their throats before performances. MAY HELP WOUND TREATMENT Some research shows that the topical application of honey on minor to moderate wounds may speed up healing. According to the US National Institutes of Health, honey is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and has remarkable debriding action. Honey orange salmon A salmon recipe out of the ordinary to surprise family or guests. Ingredients: 3/4 cup orange juice 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 1/2 teaspoons water salt and pepper to taste 2 egg whites 2 tablespoons cumin seed 2 tablespoon coriander seeds 2 tablespoons fennel seeds 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 4 salmon fillets, skin on Method: 1. First, make the glaze by whisking together orange juice, honey, lemon juice and ginger in a nonreactive pan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. 2. Mix cornstarch and water in a separate bowl. Add to pan and simmer 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly as mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 3. Whisk egg whites in a shallow bowl until foamy. Place cumin seed, coriander and fennel in an electric spice grinder or blender. Blend until spices form a coarse powder. Place on a shallow plate. 4. Dip the flesh side of the salmon in egg whites and then into the spice mixture. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Place the salmon skin side up and spice side down in the pan. Fry about five minutes or until a crust forms. Flip the fillets and cook about five more minutes until fish is tender. Place crust side up on a serving plate. Drizzle glaze over fillets before serving. IMPROVES ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey to enhance their performance. Indeed, studies have shown that honey is an excellent ergogenic aid. Its carbohydrates can be easily converted into glucose. Therefore, it helps to maintain blood sugar levels, muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration after a workout. AIDS WEIGHT LOSS Even though honey contains more calories than sugar per teaspoon, honey is slightly sweeter - so you can use less - plus healthier. Honey-glazed pork tenderloin Easy and quick to prepare, this honey-glazed pork recipe can give your Sunday roast a distinctive twist. Ingredients: 1/3 cup honey 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 tablespoons sesame oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 pork tenderloins Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 230°C. 2. In a bowl, mix the honey, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and balsamic vinegar. 3. Place the pork tenderloins in a roasting pan, and roast for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. 4. Remove the pork from oven and baste with the honey sauce. Reduce the oven temperature to 175°C, and continue roasting pork 45 minutes, basting occasionally with the honey sauce. Serve immediately.
