The Weekend Neos Kosmos : 12 September 2015
DIGITAL.NEOSKOSMOS.COM THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2015 19 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Richmond gets a taste of Greek Calombaris is the word, with the opening of a fourth Jimmy Grants and a new cookbook Chef and entrepreneur George Calombaris is going from strength to strength, with the recent opening of his fourth Jimmy Grants. The casual yet stylish Greek eatery opened in Richmond last month and, according to the chef, is his "best yet". It’s designed to feel like his grandparents’ first home after they migrated to Australia in the 1970s. “We've even got vintage wallpaper and all the framed pictures hanging in the hallway," said Calombaris. To celebrate the new location, four new items have been added to the menu, including a glutenfree souvlaki and what Calombaris describes as "the crazy-good" Mr Whippopoulos - a chocolate baklava soft serve to satisfy your sweet tooth. In the midst of opening his new store as well as co-hosting MasterChef, the 36-year-old has also managed to find time to pen a new cookbook. Fittingly titled GREEK, the soon-to-be-released collection of recipes is an homage to the chef's upbringing, sharing the food he grew up with, along with his enthusiasm for all things Greek. In true Calombaris fashion, you can expect traditional recipes, but with a modern and adventurous twist - Baklava cocktail anyone? Or how about taramosalata popcorn, ouzo-soaked cucumbers, slow-cooked lamb, miso eggplant souvlaki and prawn saganaki tortellini with tomato and mustard seed vinaigrette? Amongst all those, Calombaris has included one recipe that he holds especially dear to his heart: his grandmother's doughnuts. "Sunday afternoons were Vegas in Australia The famous Greek band start their tour in Adelaide BILLY COTSIS When your YouTube channel is the most popular in Greece, you know you’re on to something. When you somehow manage to complete close to 700 performances in almost eight years, you know that 'something' is special. Vegas is a group that has surprised everyone with its success and creativity since its formation in 2008. The first self-titled album was released in 2009 and produced two hits. Their second offering, 'Season 2’, achieved gold sales whilst their latest, 'The Story So Far', was released during the summer of 2012 and included their biggest hit thus far - Pio Psila. This song achieved the status of most-played song on Greek radio during 2012, while it also reached 20 million views on YouTube, making it the second most viewed Greek video clip ever. With such an impressive background, it is no wonder that Vegas will be coming our way on tour to Sydney and Adelaide this September. Vegas’ urban meets hip hop style of music is indicative of where modern Greek music has evolved toward in the last decade, a style that was a late bloomer to Greece more than a decade after it took hold in America. As it stands, this style has seen Vegas take the mantle of biggest group in Greece today. Fresh from a tour to the US, the sound of urban/ hip hop and an energetic performance will have local Greek fans dancing all night. The promoter behind the tour, DJ Krazy Kon of Meraki TV, is no stranger to international performing, having also had recent visits to the US. Putting aside work on his latest record, Kon told Neos Kosmos he is “proud to be associated with the tour of Vegas”. He knows this style of music is one that will be a highlight for music fans.
