4 THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER 2015 NEWS Grecian Ball an overwhelming success GCM garners $100,000 to boost Hellenic culture in Victoria NELLY SKOUFATOGLOU On Saturday 17 October, more than 50 Greek clubs and associations united in a celebration of Victoria's Hellenic culture at the Grecian Ball, under the Greek Community of Melbourne's (GCM) umbrella. The event was sold out, and more than 700 representatives of the Greek community dined and danced together at Stars International Reception Centre in Preston. Bill Papastergiadis, president of Melbourne's Greek Community, greeted the Hellenic associations and their members, urging the younger generations to sustain their ancestors' heritage. Apart from coming together to celebrate unity and their numerous achievements, the clubs debated on future solutions to preserve the history and contribution of Victoria's Greek clubs. As many Hellenic community associations are witnessing an alarming free-fall in membership numbers, the GCM president highlighted the importance of funding resources and activity. He announced the community's intention to utilise as many clubs as possible, by integrating them into the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture. "These historical groups and associations belong to the community and its members," Mr Papastergiadis stressed. "There are hundreds of clubs that could be of use to the whole community for func- PHOTOS: KOSTAS DEVES. tions, meetings, events and projects.
