NEWS 4 THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 14 MAY 2016 Turnbull’s name surfaces in Panama Papers Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is the latest figure to be revealed in the Panama Papers saga, sending the Australian media into a frenzy. According to a report by The Australian Financial Review, the register shows the PM was a former director of British Islands company Star Technology Service, which was incorporated by Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. In the 1990s Mr Turnbull, together with former NSW premier Neville Wran, joined the board of Star Mining NL, an Australian-listed company, with plans to develop a $20 billion Siberian gold mine. However, according to Mr Turnbull's spokesman, there is no suggestion the politician acted improperly during his time as director. "As the article acknowledged, there is no suggestion of any impropriety whatsoever. There is nothing new there," said Mr Turnbull on Thursday. "Let me say to you that the company in which Neville Wran and I were directors was an Australian-listed company and had it made any profits - which it did not, re- grettably - it certainly would have paid tax in Australia - obviously you haven't studied the accounts of the company concerned." Both Mr Turnbull and Mr Wran resigned from the board in September 1995, and soon after stepped down from Star Technology based on work commitments Down Under. Despite his denial of any wrongdoing, opposition leader Bill Shorten is adamant the PM has "serious matters to answer". "I think it is incumbent upon him to do so fully," said Mr Shorten. DIGITAL.NEOSKOSMOS.COM PHOTO: AAP/LUKAS COCH. Varvaris to recontest Barton Liberal party incumbent faces uphill battle rowly. This time around, with the redistribution of the electorate by the electoral commission, he faces a stiffer challenge. The MP was reported to be PHOTO: MIKE SWEET. After months of hesitation, Sydney MP Nickolas Varvaris has announced his intention to run again for the inner-western seat of Barton on 2 July. But the media-shy Liberal will be up against it. In 2013 Mr Varvaris won the seat nar- devastated by the redistribution, which turns the seat held by the Liberal party by less than one point, to one notionally held by Labor by more than four per cent. Last year Mr Varvaris' parents made an impassioned plea to the electoral commission to keep the Barton electorate unchanged. Liberals have reportedly interpreted Mr Varvaris' late confirmation to run as a show of anger towards the party hierarchy over the redistribution as well as the state govern- ment's amalgamation policy. "He doesn't feel like they've done much for him," one Liberal colleague told Fairfax Media. Adding to Mr Varavaris' woes is the high-profile of Labor's candidate Linda Burney, who, if elected, would become the first Indigenous woman to become a member of the House of Representatives. Mr Varvaris, who was seen as a fervent supporter of Tony Abbott in the Liberal leadership battle, has been described as a "low-profile MP" since winning the Barton seat for the Liberals for the first time. A former accountant, he has also held the mayorship of Kogarah Council. Children’s safety a priority for Mikakos The Andrews Labor government has gone above and beyond the 148 workers target it announced in last year's Victorian Budget, by employing more than 200 child protection professionals. Through Roadmap for Re- form, the government is implementing an overhaul of the broader child protection system, aligning with the Royal Commission into Family Violence recommendations. This is a milestone move towards keeping children and young people safe, by reinforcing the child protection system in order to provide vital help to families in crisis. The new workers will meet the recent growth in child protection reports, which is largely underpinned by family violence. "The Andrews Labor government is boosting the child protection workforce so that Victorian kids can lead safe, happy and healthy lives," Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said. "The former Liberal government failed to meet demand for the essential services child protection workers provide. By contrast, we know the importance of keeping kids safe, and giving them the opportunity to reach their potential. The focus shifts from crisis response to prevention and early intervention which will have a direct, positive and lasting im- pact on vulnerable children." Apart from the pre-approved 184 child protection positions, 32 advanced child protection workers will be offering their services. The reform includes 12 new family violence specialist child protection workers and four dedicated child protection practice leaders identifying children at risk of sexual exploitation - working with Victoria Police to prevent it and supporting young people to recover. Meanwhile, to help reduce call waiting times and undertake visits related to urgent reports, six additional child protection workers will join the Child Protection After Hours Emergency Service. 52405
