WHAT’S 10 THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 2016 On VIC DEMETRIOU & ARGYROPOULOS IN MELBOURNE Christella Demetriou and Argyris Argyropoulos will join forces to present a colourful palette of traditional and contemporary Greek music sessions at Open Studio (204 High Street, Northcote) in Melbourne this month. Venturing Down Under from Greece, Christella sings and plays the bouzouki, while Argyris sings and plays acoustic guitar. Joining them will be Ilias Gilos, who has recently settled in Melbourne from Thessaloniki, where he studied and worked as an accordionist. A show not to be missed, this is your last chance to catch the trio perform on Wednesday 28 September at 8.30 pm. Tickets - $10 adults and $8 concession. Taking place from 12 October-3 November, in Melbourne screenings will be held at The Astor Theatre and Palace Cinema Como. Featuring a selection of the latest features, documentaries and shorts, this year the festival is offering a proud survey of contemporary Greek film. Among those being screened are Cloudy Sunday, Worlds Apart, Park, Summer Lovers and a host of others, including some classic favourites featuring Thanasis Veggos. NSW KONSTANTINOS KOUFOS’ AUSTRALIAN CLUB TOUR ‘16 Following his performance in South Australia, Konstantinos Koufos will hit the stage in Sydney tonight, Saturday 24 September. HELLENIC LYCEUM LAUNCH & LECTURE OF GREEK CAFES & MILK BARS OF AUSTRALIA The Hellenic Lyceum will host the launch of the anticipated book Greek Cafes & Milk Bars of Australia by Leonard Janiszewski and Effy Alexakis. The book is a homage to Greek cafés and milk bars like The Niagara, The Parthenon, The California, The Astoria and Paragon, where locals were first introduced to a concept that brought together friendly hospitality, local fare and new American food catering ideas. Open seven days and sometimes even 24 hours a day, customers could get everything from milkshakes, lollies, ice cream and home-style meals. Taking place at Glebe Town Hall (Southern Hall, Level 2, 160 St Johns Rd, Glebe) on Saturday 25 September, the event will commence at 3.00 pm and will also feature the launch of longitudinal study Black Night White Day: Greece-Born Women in Australia by Reginald Appleyard, Anna Amera and John Yiannakis. THOSE ROXY GREEKS FILM SCREENING Those Roxy Greeks, by Peter Prineas, will be screened on Thursday 6 October at the Greek Bilingual Bookshop (837 New Canterbury Rd, Dulwich Hill) at 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start. The 30-minute documentary, based on Prineas’ book Katsehamos and The Great Idea, was made earlier this year in honour of the Roxy Theatre at Bingara’s 80th anniversary, and is a story of wars, national schism, catastrophe and of course, a small-town cinema. The event will kick off with an introduction by Associate Professor Nicholas Doumanis, along with a talk by the documentary maker himself. SA ODYSSEY FESTIVAL Greeks and Philhellenes are preparing to embark on a Hellenic cultural journey this month, with the 2016 Odyssey Festival. Celebrating its 11th year, the month-long event will once again be presented by the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia Inc., with an exciting program including exhibitions, lectures, theatrical productions, music nights, cultural events and more, all of which are keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Customs and Traditions’. A chance to share a snapshot of Hellenism with the wider community, the festival will commence on Friday 30 September at the Olympic Hall (288 Franklin Street, Adelaide) from 6.30 pm, with events running until 29 October.
