NEWS 6 THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 29 OCTOBER 2016 Emily thanks the Greek community My Big Fat Greek High Tea and other fundraisers managed to raise $44,500 to cover the medical expenses of the teenager suffering from a rare, debilitating disease It's been almost a month since Neos Kosmos wrote about 16-year-old Emily Karakatsanis and the extreme health challenges she faces, and the Greek community has rushed to her support, raising $44,500 to fund her trip to the US, where she is hoping to get the treatment she needs. My Big Fat Greek High Tea raised more than $23,000, while another fundraiser brought in $19,000. Moreover, last week, one of our former colleagues at Neos Kosmos, Matina Panagiotopoulos, held a party for her 80th birthday celebration. Touched by Emily's story, she asked friends to donate money for the teenager, raising $2,500. "I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart," says Emily’s mother, Lauren Karakatsanis. Diagnosed with two rare diseases, Idiopathic HyperEosinophilic Syndrome together with a myriad of other features, including postural tachycardia, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Raynaud's Phenomenon, Bechets Disease, chronic fatigue, vasculitis and fibromyalgia, Emily has been going in and out of So far, her body rejects any kind of treatment; the family has exhausted all options in Australia and sought consultation from specialists at the acclaimed Mayo Clinic and the National Institute of Health in Washington. The overall cost is estimated to be over $80,000, which puts a lot of stress on the desperate family. So far, $44,500 has been raised, but there is still a long way to go. Famed composer Christos Ioannidis wrote the score, which was brought to life by the 25-piece Camerata Chamber Orchestra led by conductor Douglas Heywood OAM, together with the 52-member Camerata Chorus. Performing as part of the group were multi-award-winning baritone Adrian McEniery and nationally-renowned soprano Lauren Savrasov (Oldham). Meanwhile, throughout the concert, Rena Frangioudakis and Vaios Anastassopoulos narrated the story to ensure the audience was able to stay PHOTO: THEANO MILIDES. on track, with explanations in both Greek and English. As the name suggests, an important running theme throughout the production was Alexander's role in pioneering multiculturalism and promoting Hellenic ideals within a vast multicultural empire. While the narrative may date back thousands of years, the vision continues to resonate even in 2016, as leaders from countries like Australia and others with tighter borders, seek to find ways to bring different cultural and interfaith groups together and live in greater harmony. President of the AIMS, Pro- fessor Anastasios Tamis, said that while he prefers to leave the final verdict up to the audience, he was extremely pleased with the execution of the production and expressed his thanks to all involved. "Naturally I must thank Christos Ioannidis for his excellent creation of music, combining Greek, contemporary and classical, and also our conductor for the excellent performance and the implementation of Christos' composition. My sincere thanks to Rena Frangioudakis and Vaios Anastassopoulos for their narrations, and our charismatic diva Lauren and tenor Adrian McEniery," Professor Tamis told Neos Kosmos. But for the professor, it was ultimately the huge turn-out of numbers on the night and their enthusiasm that left the most impressive mark. "It was a combined effort. It proves that by Hellenes in Australia closely working with Australian artists, we are able and capable of presenting these kinds of concerts, sharing the mainstream facilities and the mainstream talent. And this combination of talents, I think, is enriching multiculturalism and also enriches the cohesion we should have." Maria Katsonis named among 100 Women of Influence for 2016 A significant and well-deserved honour for the Greek Australian mental health advocate Author and public servant Maria Katsonis has been named as one of the 100 Women of Influence for 2016. The director of Family Violence and Service Delivery Reform at the Department of Premier and Cabinet in Victoria, Katsonis was selected under the category of 'Diversity', for her dedication to advocacy for mental health and LGBTI issues. Having started out in theatre production, the 54-year-old began working with the state government in the arts and industry development, and has since gone on to serve in various senior executive positions in social policy, LGBTI, family violence and policy review areas. Outspoken about her experience with depression, which she reveals in great detail in her popular memoir The Good Greek Girl, she is the most senior Victorian public servant to have disclosed mental illness and come out as gay. Embracing the challenges she has come to face as a chance to do good for the community, Katsonis is an advocate for mentally healthy work places and is an ambassador for beyondblue, and the founding member of Open Minds. Now in its fifth year, the 100 Women of Influence initiative is an opportunity to increase the visibility of women's leadership in Australia across various sectors of society and highlights their essential and ongoing contribution to the nation's success.
