PHOTO: THE NEW DAILY VIC HAUTE COUTURE IN ANCIENT GREECE: THE SPECTACULAR COSTUMES OF ARIADNE & HELEN OF TROY On show at the Hellenic Museum (280 William St, Melbourne) direct from the US, this exhibition brings to life the magnificent costumes worn by Minoans and Mycenaeans of Bronze Age Greece ca. 2,000 to 1,200 BCE. It displays garments recreated through Dr Bernice Jones’ meticulous analysis of textiles represented in sculptures and wall paintings of the period, and includes explanatory drawings of the construction of the garments and hand-woven linen samples of the garments’ cloth patterns, bands, and trim. For enquiries, visit hellenic.org.au ALEXANDER’S GREAT JOURNEY As part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, enjoy a delicious dining adventure retracing the route of Alexander the Great with dishes from Greece, Turkey, Assyria, and Persia eating as he would have. A series of courses will be made using traditional methods and with the finest ingredients as you make your way across the historic region of Mesopotamia. Alexander’s Great Journey will be hosted by Philhellene Provincial Greek Cuisine (551-553 Mount Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds) on Tuesday 20 March NSW HELLENIC COMMUNITIES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN This talk provides a snapshot of historic Hellenic communities across the Mediterranean, from the ancient colonies to the modern era. Learn about how these communities came about, how they survived, and what impact they have had on Hellenism and/or the host country. Taking place on Tuesday 27 March at Beta Bar (238 Castlereagh St, Sydney) at 6.45 pm, it will be presented ACT IN SEARCH OF ORPHEUS This weekend the Hellenic Club (13 Moore St, Canberra) is hosting a screening of In Search of Orpheus. The documentary by Tzeli Hadjidimitriou is part of a series of films under the title Silent Path shot in Lesvos, Greece during the financial and migrant crises to give a voice to everyday people who live their lives quietly, but know how to share, laugh, create, love, endure, and keep on going with dignity, preserving a way of living in harmony with their environment. It is screening in the Poseidon Room on Sunday 18 March from 6.00 - 8.00 pm, followed by short presentation and artist talk.
