16 - ΝΕΟΣ ΚΟΣΜΟΣ ΠΕΜΠΤΗ 5 ΙΟΥΛΙΟΥ 2018 The next 60 years - 1959-2018 1959 In February 1959 Bishop Ezekiel Tsoukalas, who was the Assistant Bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and had served as a Bishop in Boston and Chicago, was appointed the fourth Metropolitan Archbishop of Australia and New Zealand. On 1 September 1959 the Metropolis of Australia and New Zealand was elevated to the Archdiocese of Australia and New Zealand and Archbishop Ezekiel became the fi rst Archbishop of the Archdiocese. In1970 the Metropolis of New Zealand was established and Archbishop Ezekiel became the Archbishop of Australia. 1959 Th e Greek Orthodox Community NSW established a third Church, the Dormination of Th eotokos at Abercrombie Street Redfern. 1963 Th e Greek Orthodox Community NSW purchased the former Odeon Cinema building at the corner of Oxford and South Dowling Streets, Paddington. Aft er alterations to the interior, it was used as the Offi ce of GOC and for meetings. Also renovations took place to provide two cinemas fronting into Oxford Street and leased out to a private concern as a theatre complex. 1966 1978 - 1989 Th e consolidation of the Greek Orthodox Community NSW and the Greek Orthodox Community Sydney NSW was formalised into one organisation namely Th e Greek Orthodox Community NSW. Th e Greek Orthodox Community NSW established three Day Care Centres at Stanmore and Marrickville 1982 Th e Greek Orthodox Community NSW initiated the fi rst Greek Festival of Sydney. 1992 Th e Foundation Stone ceremony of the Greek Orthodox Community NSW Aged Care Facility at Earlwood. 2016 Saint Sophia Cathedral the fi rst Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Australia (1927) is awarded State Heritage listing by the NSW Government and the Board appointed a Saint Sophia Advisory Committee, comprising of Nicholas Malaxos (Coordinator) Costa Vrisakis, Christine Lynch, Harry Danalis, Nia Karteris, John Barbouttis, Debbie Agapitos, Nicholas Pappas, Tasha Vanos and Christopher Skiladellis, to advice the Board on the conduct of the ‘Saint Sophia RestorationAppeal’ aimed at raising donor funds to fund the restoration of Saint Sophia over a period of three years. 2017 Th e Greek Orthodox Community NSW sold the former Odeon building at Paddington for $23m aft er a majority vote was received from its members at an Extraordinary General Meeting 23 March 2017. 2018 The Board had appointed a Building Committee comprising of Harry Danalis (Chair), Michael Tsilimos, Nia Karteris, Chris Belerhas, Dimitris Kospetas, Con Apoifis, Nick Gratsounas, George Diamantaris, Peter Tsintilas, Nick Thliveris, Nick Katris and Con Papanikitas, to recommend to the Board the purchase of an appropriate asset or assets that will give the GOC a reasonable financial return so that it may fund its varied social, cultural and welfare services to the Greek community. Today the Greek Orthodox Community NSW is responsible for an Aged Care facility known as the ‘Ελληνικό Σπίτι’, twenty afternoon schools with 550 students and 24 appropriately qualified teachers, teaching the Greek language. As well it is responsible for three Day Care centres in Stanmore and Marrickville, Greek Festival, Greek Film Festival, and Greek Community Club, a community welfare facility involving four groups of senior citizens at various locations in Sydney, provides free legal and tax advice to the community.
