NEW AIRLINE SET TO HIT THE SKIES Athens Spirit, a new airline focused on both domestic routes within Greece and a few international destinations, is set to be launched soon though it is still unclear where it's hub airport will be. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED CENTRAL MACEDONIA IN THE BIG APPLE Central Macedonia was in the spotlight at last month's New York Times Travel Show showcasing destinations and tourism offerings to travellers in the United States.This is the first time that the region participated in the travel show, following a 20.3 per cent increase in travel receipts in the first nine months of 2018 and ranking first in Greece in terms of international arrivals. There were 6.8 million international arrivals to the region in 2018, and the region now hopes to grow this figure and gain a larger share of the US travel market. WTO COMMENDS GREEK TOURISM The World Tourism Organization (WTO) praised the Greek tourism sector for its record-breaking performance in 2018, proving yet again that the industry is a pylon of strength when it comes to the Greek economy. A WTO tweet on Sunday congratulated Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura for her work, stating: "Greece again proved its strength as a tourism economy with record results in 2018. Generating income, creating jobs and contributing to sustainable development." ROBERT MCCABE EXHIBITION The people, the monuments and the landscape, drew the attention of Robert McCabe when he was still a 20-year-old Princeton student in the Fifties. He travelled to the most remote parts of Greece, exploring the land, and taking amazing photos. Photographs from 1954-1955 are currently on display at the Archaeological Society of Athens through to March 29. The exhibition, titled Chronographia - Exhibition for the 180 years (1837-2017) of the Archaeological Society, features 53 black and white photos feauring sites such as the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, Sounio, Knossos, Santorini, Mycenae, Epidaurus and Delos.
