The Weekend Neos Kosmos : 27 April 2019
DIGITAL.NEOSKOSMOS.COM THE WEEKEND NEOS KOSMOS | SATURDAY 27 APRIL 2019 21 SPORTS winners sinners & by alex anyfantis Just as every week, we choose the Winners and Sinners of Greek and Australian sport Tasos Donis’ rich talent has been held back by the several injuries that he has suffered along the way. PHOTO: APE/MPE Liga, 10 in the Champions League and 5 in the Europa League, with Benfica looking to make it all the way to the final. He will definitely be the national team's goalkeeper for the next few years. OTHER PLAYERS Besides the players already mentioned, there are sever- al others that haven’t made the list but show great potential (Mavropanos-Arsenal, Lykogiannis-Cabliari, Nikolaou-Empoli, Antzoulas-Fiorentina. Others have been injured and missing the majority of the season (Retsos-Leverkusen, KapinoWerder Bremen), while there are also quite a few players in the Greek Super League that have proven they could easily stand on a competitive international level, such as masouras, Tsimikas, Galanopoulos, Katranis, Koulouris, Chatziovanis, Bouzoukis and many more. One thing is for certain though, the future is definitely looking bright for the Greek national team. PAOK are officially the new champions of Greece, celebrating their success in spectacular fashion. PHOTO: APE/MPE WINNERS PAOK Congratulations are in order for the new Greek champions! They waited for 34 years for their return to the throne of Greek football, and their return was made in great style. PAOK won the title having 25 wins and four draws in 29 games (one remains), scoring 64 goals and conceding just 14 in the process. Their impressive stats leave great hope for the future, with the SINNERS NEWCASTLE JETS Vangelis Pavlidis (left) and Marios Vrousai (right) became a force to be reckoned with from the first minute they started playing together at Dutch club Willem II. PHOTO: APE/MPE Something must have gone very wrong for a team to go all the way from last season’s playoff final to not participating at all. Not a lot of things have change at Newcastle and Ernie Merrick still has the majority of the players that were in that game against Victory, but the quality of their performance has dropped so dramatically that they were hardly even considered a threat all season long. Having players like Petratos, Vargas, Boogard and Champness, the team should really have done a lot better than just seventh place in the A-League after being disqualified three games before the end of regular season. They will need to take a good hard look at themselves in order to right all their wrongs if they are to return to form ahead of next season. KOSTAS MAVROPANOS As a young player, you don’t get many opportunities to prove you deserve a spot in the starting lineup of a club as big as Arsenal. For Kostas Mavropanos, it appears one of those chances may have come and gone. Given a position in the defensive trio alongside Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny in their home game against Crystal Palace, Mavropanos appeared to be out of his element. Striker Christian Benteke was easily able to leave him behind and head the first goal for the visitors, while a few minutes later the 21-year-old was penalised for a clumsy challenge on the Belgian. He was subbed at half time, leaving a bad impression and one has to wonder how many more chances his manager Unai Emery will be willing to give him. expectations of fans escalating, starting with the Greek Cup trophy that will be the cherry on top of an already highly successful season. The people at the club seem just as ambitious and in no way willing to stop here. OLYMPIACOS WOMEN’S WATER POLO TEAM Reaching the European final of any competitive sport is no small feat, and even though they weren’t able to walk away with the trophy, the Olympiacos water polo team did extremely well just to make it as far as they have. After a hard-fought contest, Haris Pavlidis’ players weren’t able to topple Spanish giant Sabadel in Barcelona and eventually lost the game by 13-11. But they walked away feeling proud and knowing that they had given it their best shot, and with hopes of a great future ahead.
